I was reading this proof that the summation of an alternating series is divergent. They prove it by saying that if $\sum a_n$ is convergent, then $\sum a_1$ and $\sum a_{ -1}$ are also convergent, hence the sum of the series must be divergent.
What I don’t understand is that $\sum a_1$ is not a convergent series, since $a_n$ is alternating. But this line seems to be proofing the opposite: the series $\sum a_1$ is convergent, hence the series $\sum a_n$ must be also convergent.
