Gallbladder cancer is a rare malignancy with high-risk of metastasis. Gallbladder cancer shares the same pathway of glucose metabolism, suggesting that gallbladder cancer cells have high glucose metabolism. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) for gallbladder cancer. A total of 10 patients with newly diagnosed gallbladder cancer underwent FDG PET/CT before any therapy. FDG PET/CT imaging was performed on Biograph mCT scanner (Siemens). The maximal standard uptake value (SUV(max)) was compared between histological and non-invasive tumors. The overall sensitivity and specificity of FDG PET/CT were 82% and 100%, respectively. We also evaluated SUV(max) of mucinous type cancer, which often causes non-diagnostic histology, and differentiated cancers. SUV(max) of histologically non-invasive cancers was significantly lower than that of well-differentiated cancer (1.65 vs. 3.45, P = 0.0002). SUV(max) of mucinous type cancers was also significantly lower than that of well-differentiated cancers (1.72 vs. 3.45, P = 0.0002). FDG PET/CT is a useful imaging tool for gallbladder cancer, especially for gallbladder cancer of mucinous type.
